2026 Dubbed the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are not at all new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. But, their visibility has seemingly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are legitimate amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To quantify this trend, I conducted a detailed review into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a steady increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially visible elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the trend in gaming appears particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their elastic legs and grappling abilities enable a host of innovative control schemes.
A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.
Should these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we might just be on the verge of a true croaking cultural moment.
